Getting Back to Normalcy

Declaration 1017, which put the whole country under the State of National Emergency, was finally lifted first week of March. GMA was convinced that peace and order situation has normalized and the alleged coup plot has been totally crushed. But the big question remains, are threats really over?

As we look back, since the presidency of Mrs. Corazon Aquino in 1986 up to the present, the military has never stopped attempting to launch coups; one after the other but all were a failure. Former Pres. Ramos was quoted by media as saying that instituting much needed reforms in the military institutions could possibly quell future mutinies, specifically by shielding the military and the police institutions from political interventions, according to him.

This thought is very unlikely, maybe not in a country like the Philippines when everyone lives with and breathes politics. I just hope there are other more achievable solutions that our great leaders could think about to solving this deepening faction in the military leadership.

Reports were told that some discontented members of the marines and scout rangers had been airing their grievances months before the foiled coup, but were apparently not being heard by their superiors.

Presuming those were valid grievances that fell on cold shoulders, still, it was not justified enough to undertake such action at the expense of the constitution and the government that they have sworn allegiance and life with. Even if we say that this government isn’t what everyone wants it to be – that I believe is true professionalism. Oh well, human nature is human nature as they say. Maybe only heroes can do that... but where are they now?
